Former President Clinton will appear on Oprah Winfrey's TV talk show next
Tuesday, Sept. 4, his first interview to promote "Giving," a book on
philanthropy and civic action coming out the same day.

Clinton's appearance was announced Monday in an e-mail 鈥� "The first
interview about his new passion!" 鈥� sent to members of Winfrey's book
club.

Winfrey, who interviewed Clinton in 2004 for his memoir "My Life," has
good reason to think highly of the new book. "Giving" praises Winfrey's
"Angel Network," which has donated millions of dollars around the world,
from money for schools in Africa to relief aid for victims of Hurricane
Katrina.

The book also includes comments from Winfrey, who was asked why she
started the Angel Network, and another charitable organization, the Oprah
Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.

"I wanted to give back what I was given, a sense of worth," she replied.
"Everyone wants to matter."

Clinton has other interviews planned next week, including one with Larry
King on CNN and with David Letterman on CBS television's "Late Show."

Daniel Radcliffe's new starring role has hit an embarrassing hitch - he
can't ride his character's motorcycle.

The Harry Potter star is shooting British TV drama My Boy Jack and part
of the role requires Radcliffe to ride a motorbike. But Radcliffe does
not know how to operate the vehicle, according to British newspaper The
Independent.

A source tells the newspaper, "Daniel can't ride the bike on set but we
have stuntmen and doubles who can do that for him. We do use Daniel for
the close-ups because all he has to do is sit on the bike whilst it's not
moving."

Eagles to release first studio album in 28 years

The Eagles will release "Long Road Out of Eden," their first full studio
album for 28 years, in October, Universal Music Group said on Wednesday.

The top-selling band, whose hits include "Hotel California" and "Life in
the Fast Lane," split in 1980 but reunited 14 years later and have toured
intermittently since.

Universal will distribute the new album outside North America, while in
the United States the record will be released through Wal-Mart stores,
warehouse retail chain Sam's Club and the band's Web site
www.eaglesband.com.

It will hit the shelves internationally on October 29 and in the United
States one day later, Universal added.

The first single from the album, "How Long," has already had its video
and radio premiere.

"It's rare to have the opportunity to be involved with a band of their
stature, as they define popular music in so many ways," said Lucian
Grainge, CEO of Universal Music Group International.

The Eagles, comprising Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B.
Schmit, last released a studio album of new songs -- "The Long Road" --
in 1979.

The band's "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975" is the best-selling album in
recorded music history in the United States, with sales of more than 29
million copies, according to Universal. The Eagles have sold around 120
million albums worldwide.

US act on poultry reflects 'protectionism'

A recent US act that blocks China's poultry exports to the US market
smacks of "trade protectionism" and will affect 20 million Chinese
farmers, according to the poultry industry.

The US House of Representatives earlier this month passed the
Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related
Agencies Appropriations Act, 2008. It stipulates that "none of the funds
made available in this Act may be used to establish or implement a rule
allowing poultry products to be imported into the United States from the
People's Republic of China."

Without permits from certain rules, Chinese poultry products could have
no access to the US market.

"The act not only undermines the joint efforts by the Chinese and US
governments in the past three years to boost meat trade, but also
reflects discrimination against the Chinese poultry industry," the
poultry sub-chamber of the China Chamber of Commerce of Import and Export
of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By-products told China Daily
yesterday.

China is the largest meat producer in the world and the second largest
poultry producer after the United States.

The Chinese poultry industry said it "strongly opposes" the act as it
"violated basic rules of the World Trade Organization and is against the
principles of fair trade".

The government has made great concessions in meat trade since it joined
the World Trade Organization in 2001. It promised to remove tariffs on
meat by 2010 and has completely opened its meat market to international
players.

US poultry exports to China have increased remarkably since then.

From 2001 to July 2007, broiler exports to China totaled 2.71 million
tons, accounting for some 78 percent of China's total imports.

However, the poultry sub-chamber said, the United States has not opened
its market to Chinese poultry products even after a three-year
investigation and evaluation.

Nicole Richie has certainly learnt that prevention is better than cure,
and has now banned beau Joel Madden from posing for pics with other
pretty girls.

Richie, who is well aware how fast rumours can spread in tinsel town, has
put her man on a short leash, and the news comes from Madden himself.

Madden was at the hotspot Village Pourhouse on Third Avenue celebrating
its first anniversary when a party promoter asked him to pose with a cute
woman.

However, Madden turned down the offer, citing his ladylove's instructions.

"He said he couldn't, as Nicole gave him strict orders not to take
pictures with other celebrities or girls for rumour purposes," the New
York Post quoted a source, as saying.

The couple are expecting their first child later this year.

China Mobile profit surges

China Mobile Ltd's profit surged 29 percent in the second quarter as the
company added a record number of users, driven by gains in rural areas,
where lower-income residents were attracted by reduced charges.

Net income of the world's largest mobile phone operator by subscribers
rose to 20.3 billion yuan from 15.8 billion yuan a year earlier,
according to calculations based on the first-half earnings reported by
the Beijing-based company yesterday.

The company's shares fell 4.9 percent to HK$80.85, or 3.92 percent, in
Hong Kong.

China Mobile, whose 332.4 million users outnumber the US population, has
shifted focus from cities to smaller towns and villages, where there is
less competition. CEO Wang Jianzhou waived some charges to attract rural
residents, who make up three-quarters of China's 1.3 billion population.

"China Mobile has executed the rural strategy very well, and more than
half of the company's new subscribers are from the rural areas," said
Desmond Tjiang, who manages $1.3 billion in Asian equities at Fortis
Investment Management in Hong Kong, including China Mobile shares. "It's
the right move."

Sales are estimated to have risen by 23.5 percent to 88.9 billion yuan.
Rainie Lei, a spokeswoman at China Mobile, declined to comment on the
second-quarter numbers.

The company's stock has risen 53 percent in the past year, compared with
an 18 percent gain in the benchmark Hang Seng Index. China Mobile is the
world's 10th-largest company by market value.
